I want a Chumby

30 Aug 2006

Chumby

Its kinda hard to explain. Just go to the site and have a look, if you don’t grok it never-mind, stop reading now. I am not sure what I would do with one, but half the fun is finding out. It seems like the perfect marriage of Maker and Crafter. A ambient device with personality. I think it would be fun to turn one into a physical avatar. Right now they have a sign-up list on their site to get a sample prototype. I have filled one out already, I wonder if multiple submissions would help?

I hope I get one!

Dapper allows you to easily build an API for any website.

28 Aug 2006

Dapper logoDapper’s mission is to allow you to use any web based content in any way you can imagine. And by use, we mean going beyond just reading or viewing a webpage. You may want to create an RSS feed or a Google Gadget for a site, take a site’s content and put it on a map, receive an email alert when your site’s Alexa’s ranking goes below 5000, or create a mashup of your favorite band’s tour dates and a camping locations reservation website to organize your musical camping vacation. Whatever you want to do, however you want to mold the web, Dapper can help you do it.

Happy Birthday

25 Aug 2006

Happy Birthday everyone!

Virgos — “They combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. They have an excellent eye for detail but they may be so meticulous that they neglect larger issues. Also, although they are realists, they may slow down projects by being too exact.”

Ethernet Wiring Diagram

24 Aug 2006

Ethernet PocketModAdded another PocketMod today. This one is a simple drawing of wiring an ethernet clip, based on the T-568B standard. The only reason for using that standard is because I had some other network cables that were the same already. Everytime I need to make a cable I do a search on google for the diagram. So I decided it was about time to create a PocketMod for one.

Judging a book by its cover

23 Aug 2006

instant coffeeJust like instant coffee and instant messenger, there is “instant dislike”. You meet someone for the first time and you just know you do not like them or don’t trust them. There is no reasonable explanation, you just don’t like them. There have been a few people in my past that I have made instant enemies with. Which later turned out to be justified or may have been a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I have a theory why people do this. It comes from our early ancestors on the savanna, popping their head up from the grass and quickly looking around to see if that saber-tooth tiger was prey or predator. Or the person coming towards you at the waterhole was friend or foe. In order to survive you had a split second to size up the threat and categorize them.

From News@Princeton (via: Boing Boing: Snap character judgements)

“The link between facial features and character may be tenuous at best, but that doesn’t stop our minds from sizing other people up at a glance,” said Todorov, an assistant professor of psychology. “We decide very quickly whether a person possesses many of the traits we feel are important, such as likeability and competence, even though we have not exchanged a single word with them. It appears that we are hard-wired to draw these inferences in a fast, unreflective way…”

FlatArt Shirts

I Club My Dog ShirtWARNING!
Blatant self-promotion. I have had this design on cafe press for over a year, and as far as I can tell no one has ever ordered one. To be fair, I haven’t order one either.

The Ringer T has made a fashion comeback, and ours is a popular favorite. This classic style is sure to impress even the most discerning t-shirt connoisseur with an eye for retro-coolness. Great for relaxing in comfort year-round.

CRACKED is BACK!

21 Aug 2006

Sylvester P. SmytheI read CRACKED magazine when I was a kid. But, I always seemed to pick underdog:

  • I read CRACKED, my friends read MAD
  • I read DC comics, my friends read Marvel
  • used Macintosh, everyone else used Windows

They are launching a new version of the magazine with the obligatory website. It looks like it is aimed at the Maxim crowd, definitely not for children. Here is a sample of the articles.
